Making Sense of the Bible

Once a month (1st Tuesday of each month) we will be gathering at Cath’s house to look at passages from the bible and see what they have to say to us today.

The first session (June 3rd) will be a practical overview answering questions and giving us the tools we need to begin to read the bible. Get in touch with Cath if you are interested in coming along.

Cafechurch

Cafechurch is a really relaxed, fun and informal way to look at some of the challenges and experiences we have in our lives. With practical advice, real life stories to inspire, and signposting to further resources, cafechurch is a great way to explore life with a smile on your face a free ice cream!

Sessions look something like this:

Our Minister Cath, will be leading the sessions and will be inviting members of the local community to share their stories each month.

We always have a fun 15 question quiz on the topic where tables compete against each other for Nauti vouchers. Then someone helps us to look at a topic that relates to our everday lives with a little bit of Jesus in there. It’s all really relaxed and great fun and a good way to get to know folks.

The Bereavement Journey

Loss affects us all at different times in our lives and it can be a very painful experience. The Bereavement Journey has been designed by bereavement counsellors and experts to validate every person’s experience and help them feel safe.

The Bereavement Journey is a 7-week course for any who have been affected by loss in their lives and are aged over 18 years.

Those attending will be put into a small group, who they will stay with for the 6 weeks. Each session will include showing a video, divided into 2, with times to discuss what has been said, as a small group, after each video.

There is no expectation to say or do anything. Participants make their own decisions about what feels right for them, and they do their own grief work.

We will run the course whenever people show an interest and in the Autumn term as we move towards Christmas, which can be a time of great pain and struggle.

Our next courses will run in June – 1 course  on a Monday evening and one course on a Wednesday lunchtime at Porthleven Public Hall.

Festival Angels

Porthleven Food Festival has been a yearly event in the village for over 20 years where around 40,000 people descend upon our beautiful village. For 3 days and nights each year, the harbour and surrounding area is a hive of stalls, food demonstrations, music and fun.

In 2023, Cath got together a group of Christians to serve the community during the festival called The Festival Angels and they have been welcomed back ever since.

Each year the Festival Angels serve on a daytime (12-6pm) or evening (6pm-12am) team helping the festival to run well, keeping the village quiet and clean and helping those who get into a bit of a pickle to find their way home.

The team have a base in the bus stop at the very heart of the festival where people can come for a drink, chat, prayer, chill out, find out information or use it as a baby changing facility. There is a team of 3 people who oversee the base, with the rest of the team serving in 2s either in the street in front giving out sweets and chatting with people, or anywhere else throughout the site.

The teams litter pick, help manage the traffic, keep the security guards awake with hot drinks, calm down ever exuberant festival goers, direct people to the buses and transport out of the village, answer any questions, patrol the harbour keeping people safe, and share Jesus in spoken and practical ways.

Have a look at our video from the 2024 Festival to get an idea.

The Alpha Course

Alpha is an 11-week course that creates a space, for a conversation about faith, life and God. It is for everyone, no matter your background or beliefs. Whether you’re new to exploring faith or simply open-minded about it all, Alpha is for you.

We all bring different thoughts to the table, and at Alpha we want to create a space that’s open for everyone to find what faith means for them.

What to Expect:

Connection
Life is better together. Alpha brings together people from all walks of life who are curious about faith. Each session includes time to eat, relax and get to know your group.

Content
Each session covers a different topic of faith, either in a short talk or video. The Alpha episodes are designed to engage and inspire conversation. They’re about thirty minutes long and explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? How can we have faith? How does God guide us? Why is there suffering? Why go to church?

Conversation
The last part of an Alpha is a chance to share your thoughts on the session’s topic and discuss it in your small groups. It’s an open and welcoming environment, no matter what your opinion. There’s no pressure to say anything, but the floor is yours if you do want to. Each group has a leader to help guide the conversation.

We will run the course whenever people show an interest. If you are interested in finding out more or attending a course, please email us.
